A NEW strategy to work two farms as one business has cut costs and improved efficiencies, writes KATE DOWLER Mark and Julie Veale are taking a novel approach to expansion.

The young Lake Bolac farmers are not buying out their neighbour, they are going into a collaborative farming venture with them. The family’s mixed farming enterprise was owned by Mark’s parents, Barry and Judy, who are now semi-retired. Mark and Julie bought the 770ha farm 11 years ago and managed a further 710ha until June this year. Now, the couple, both 35 and with sons Lachlan and Braden, are also running their neighbour’s farm of comparable size. “We’ve taken two family farming businesses and pushed them together to create one business,” Mark said.
